1988 Will & Betty Harris Family Christmas Letter

Elizabeth L. Harris 533 Linden St. River Falls WI 54022

December, 1988

Dear Family and Friends:

Each day the mailman brings a few more greetings from you folks, reminding me to get going on mine.  How I look forward to receiving all those cards and letters which help keep us in touch.

Last summer I was blessed with a visit from Merry and family, as well as Doug’s children.  For two weeks the rafters rang with much activity.  Erik came from Evanston for a long weekend and Bruce from Milwaukee to join in the fun, of which there was a-plenty.  There was also plenty of other things such as meals, laundry, shopping, etc . . . . and let-down when they all left.

I’m postponing my usual Christmas trip to the west coast until spring when the weather will be more enjoyable and hopefully I’ll finally get to see the wild flowers on the mountains I’ve heard so much about.

Next month I bow out after ten years as a District and Conference officer of the United Methodist Women.  It’s been a rewarding and growing experience.  I’ve been challenged and enriched through enduring friendships made, spiritual insights gained and many other benefits.  I’ll miss those shared trips around the stateland country to various gatherings.  I continue one more year as local unit president here in River Falls.  This too is a warm supportive sisterhood.

About the political scene - what can I say?  I was very disillusioned by the election, both process and results.  An OP-ED piece in the Monitor said, “Everyone knows the networks approach a presidential race as if it were the Kentucky Derby, only lesson important.”

Many community activities keep me from going to seed.  I’ve taken several art classes at UW-RF and some of the Senior Outreach short courses offered by the Extension Division.  Even conducted one session on spinning and weaving.  Which leads me to my favorite quote of the year:

“AS SOON AS A TECHNOLOGY BECOMES OBSOLETE, IT BECOMES AS ART FORM” - Jane Hancock

Then, of course, I’m still weaving as much as time and inclination permit, and don’t have any difficulty selling my products (when I can bring myself to part with them.)

Best wishes to all of you for the blessings of Christ’s love and for the joy and promise of new beginnings.

                                                                      Love and God Bless,                                                                                           Betty
